The layout of colours on my palette has been sort of hap hazard. To put it bluntly, I usually mix on a need-to-use basis. Not the worst way to do things but frankly I was looking for a better way -- actually any way. The method Robert Gamblin outlines in the video linked below is pretty logical. I've worked with the HSV colour model in my photography so the basic notion of a three dimensional colour space was old territory. Note, that however complex the model might seem at first -- know that it is finite and can be learned.
As an aside, I've found some of the best information about the material side of the painting craft from the sites of paint makers themselves.
See: The
Liquitex Acrylic Book, Golden Acrylics'
Just Paint Newsletters and a volumes of information at a watercolour site call
HandPrint which is relevant to other mediums like acrylic and oil.
...and finally what this post is about:
Watch the Gamblin "Navigating Color Space" Video. The video also does a nice job of putting artist's colour schemes into a historical context.
